I thought this article was very interesting and I have never heard of it before. It is called a Zeer Pot. It is used a lot in Africa to store perishables. Meat can last up to two weeks in it.

It works much like an evaporative cooler. I am going to try this as soon as I can find free pots on Craigs list. We take for granted our appliances but we may be in a situation one day when the frig dies and we just don't have the money to buy a new one.

That's great! Thanks for the link. I'm sure to order one would be a fortune, but I don't know why you couldn't make one.
I am doing my best to utilize dehydration and canning, rather than freezing. But it is sure challenging. It took my blackberries 3 days to dry. Not doing that again. :/

Faith pre electricity they still dried fruits and veggies. don't they have a natural air dehydrator that has insect netting around it? it hangs up.

I'll have to check out your links. I want to build an outdoor drying house, but I'm not sure how effective it will be without heat. The air is so humid that if I take dehydrated foods out of the machine, leave them on the counter with the windows open, they rehydrate too much for good storage.
