GOOD USE OF LITTLE DAYLIGHT

On the drive home I was thinking about what I could do with the little bit of daylight I would have left. (Maybe 30 minutes if I was lucky)

Mow this....clean up that...plant the other thing...none of them sounded fun after an 11.5 hour day.

One thing for sure I was going to brew a pot of fire coffee so that it was ready in the morning. for some reason these days the thought of making a good pot of coffee at 4:45am is just too much for me. So as I type I can smell that wonderful smell coming from the kitchen and I can hear the perculator performing a miracle.

It came to me when I pulled in the driveway. Just for fun I would throw on some shorts and grab a container and take a walk along the fence line and check for blackberries.

I can't believe I didn't do this with the boys on Sunday. This would have been a great outing.

4 cups of wonderful sweet juicy blackberries. Enough for 2 batches of homemade blackberry icecream made with local raw milk from Lucky Layla Farm in Plano,TX.

I will get the milk tomorrow and take it and the berries to my Mom and Dad who have a great new icecream maker. Yum

COMPOST PILE

I had my grand boys last night and they got to "camp" in the living room on the hide-a-bed. They loved it. They went to work with me this morning and got picked up around 2.

When I got home it was 85 degrees outside...not hot but humid and I am not used to it. I decided to water my starts that the boys and I planted yesterday, and to turn the compost pile. The pile was started a couple of weeks ago simply with left over mulch and llama poo + water.

Today I pulled about half of it off the top of the pile, cleaned out the chicken house and added that, plus added 3 50 gallon bags of shredded paper + water. This was layered with the mulch/poo that I pulled off of the top ending with mulch and a tarp.

This will sit until I get home from vacation...around July 1. Then I will pull the whole thing down, add more poo and paper and water and restack.

By fall I hope to have enough compost to remix all my raised beds. I will remix the beds lightly in mid-late July when I start my fall garden.

I plan on having one bed full of turnips and carrots. These I plan on leaving in the bed to store. I will cover it with a thick layer of hay or straw to protect them from hard freezes.

Beds that I am not planting a fall bed in, will be fully remixed and covered with black plastic to protect from drenching rain which would leach out the nutrients.

Subject change:

Through The Survival Pod Cast Forum, I found DebtMD and keyed in my debt. They say that I can be debt free by 2013 and have my home paid off my 2016!! I am going to get together the details of my debt and put in accurate figures and find out how. I know that it is crazy that I am broke all the time but was overwhelmed and could not figure out how to do it.

I will post more about this later. Because if I don't get out of debt I will never be able to retire!!

MOTHERS DAY FUN

I got to sleep in until 7:30 am this morning. After getting up to move the truck under cover due to an incoming storm at 4am that is...good thing I did because it hailed. J the oldest grand son wanted to sleep with me last night but his bedtime was before mine. When I got to bed he obviously had been reading instead of going to sleep.

This morning he admitted to reading and went to get the book he had read. Here it is:

He said he read the whole thing. Big book. 172 pages. So I drilled him. Every time I asked what a picture was he knew and told me the whole story. When we got to the sparkly twisted strands on a page midway through the book and I asked him what that was...and he said "dragon DNA"...I gave up. I do believe if he did not read the whole book he at least read a good portion of it. He is 8 years old. I asked him what DNA was and he said it was what makes up everything. This kid is amazing.

When you ask the youngest if he loves God he gets bubbly and says yes and talks about sun beams being where God is touching the earth. When you ask J he wants details about who God is, how he created everything, why he would give up the throne to become a baby, why he loves us. There is something amazing about J.

As usual we did things to prep for our upcoming vacation next month. The boys got out their memory foam rolls, unrolled them, laid their bedrolls on top and their favorite stuffed toys and then rolled them back up so they are ready to go. They know that each night when we set up camp they have to help me set up the tent and then roll out their beds, and in the morning they must roll up their beds and put them in the truck before they can play.

We talked about how we will cook at the camp grounds. I don't have a cook stove and had considered buying one since they are not very expensive. Then we decided to make a hobo stove. We will take 3 with us as well as a tinder box, kindling box including larger sticks which are good for this type of stove, and our own fire wood.

They worked very hard.

We cooked breakfast of scrambled eggs with salsa and pancakes for my daughter this morning. The she got a cool box stuffed full of home made pictures from all of us.

And this evening I met my parents and my sister at The Blue Oyster for dinner. Yikes it was expensive (for me anyway) but Oh my gosh with each bite we moaned our amazement. This appetizer is yukon gold potatos with some kind of sauce and blue cheese on top.

Dad had trout, mom had lobster macaroni and cheese, sis had tenderloin and I had buffalo burger. Sis and I shared a creme brule and mom and dad shared an adult smore with peanut grahm crust, a peanut brownie middle only it was gooey, and home made marshmallow on top.

I feel like a tick.
